The discount nobody claims. Children under six and visitors with severe disabilities enter the bay free. Seniors, students and people from recognised ethnic minority groups pay half on production of documentation. Nobody offers this at the window. You have to ask, and a student card is worth carrying.

Book the return with the outbound. It is the single easiest saving on the trip and takes thirty seconds.
Nine ways to spend less without having a worse time
- Share a scooter. About 200,000 VND a day split two ways beats two taxi runs to the national park.
- Eat breakfast off the street. Banh da cua costs a fraction of a hotel buffet and is better.
- Order shellfish, not the grouper. Oysters, snails and mantis shrimp deliver most of the pleasure at a fraction of the live fish price.
- Ask the price per kilo before the tank opens. Every time. This is where budgets die.
- Buy the 120,000 VND park route ticket if you are doing Ngu Lam and the cave. It is cheaper than the two separately.
- Self rent a kayak instead of a guided session if you have paddled before. 100,000 to 150,000 VND an hour plus the 40,000 VND fee, against 400,000 to 600,000 VND guided.
- Walk the Cat Co cliff path. Fifteen minutes, free, and better than a taxi to a beach.
- Travel October to April. Room rates drop once the domestic season ends and the weather is better for walking anyway.
- Check whether the bay fee is included before you pay a tour deposit. Getting billed 120,000 VND at the pier is the most common surprise here.
What is genuinely worth paying up for
Two things. A guide on the 14 km Ao Ech to Viet Hai trail, because the marking is inconsistent and there is no phone signal through the middle. And a smaller boat on your bay day, because the difference between twelve people and forty is the difference between the trip you imagined and a queue.
