How to Get from Hanoi to Cat Ba Island (2026 Guide)
The short answer: a combined bus and ferry ticket is the easiest way to get from Hanoi to Cat Ba Island. It takes about 3 to 3.5 hours door to door, costs roughly $11 to $17, and includes hotel pickup in the Old Quarter so you never have to juggle separate tickets. Below we break down that option and four others, so you can pick what fits your budget and travel style.
The route in brief
Cat Ba sits about 130 km from Hanoi by road and another 40 km or so by sea. Almost every option follows the same path: you travel from Hanoi down the Hanoi to Hai Phong expressway, cross the Tan Vu to Lach Huyen bridge toward Got Port, take a short ferry or speedboat over to Cai Vieng on Cat Ba, then drive the final 30 to 40 minutes to Cat Ba Town in the south of the island. The differences come down to comfort, price and how much of it is arranged for you.
One thing to plan around: there is generally no ferry after about 6pm. If your flight lands in the evening, it is usually better to spend the night in Hanoi or Hai Phong and travel the next morning.
1. Bus and ferry combo (the easy default)
This is what most travellers use, and what we book for the majority of our guests. A single ticket covers a comfortable limousine or coach from the Old Quarter, the ferry or speedboat crossing, and the final shuttle into Cat Ba Town. You get picked up at or near your hotel and dropped close to your accommodation on the island.
Standard buses start from around $10.50, while VIP limousine minivans with reclining leather seats, air-con, WiFi and bottled water run about $15 to $17. The whole thing takes roughly 3 to 3.5 hours. It is cheap, scenic and far simpler than most people expect.
Best for: almost everyone. If you want one ticket and zero hassle, this is the one.
2. Private car or taxi
If you are travelling as a family or small group, or you land late and want to go straight from Noi Bai Airport, a private car is the most flexible choice. A driver collects you whenever you want, you can stop for coffee or photos, and cars can drive onto the ferry so you stay in the same vehicle the whole way.
Expect roughly $75 to $145 per car one way depending on vehicle and pickup point, plus a little longer if traffic or the ferry schedule slows you down. Split between four people it is not as expensive as it first looks.
Best for: families, groups, late arrivals, and anyone who values door-to-door comfort.
3. Train and ferry via Hai Phong
For a slower, more local feel, you can take a train from Hanoi to Hai Phong, then continue to a pier and cross to Cat Ba by ferry or speedboat. It usually costs about $10 to $15 and takes around 4 to 5 hours all in. It is not the fastest, but it is cheap and gives you a glimpse of everyday Vietnamese life along the way.
Best for: budget travellers who enjoy the journey as much as the destination.
4. Motorbike
Experienced riders can make the trip by motorbike, taking the bike across on the ferry. It is the most adventurous option and gives you freedom to explore the island once you arrive. Only consider it if you are confident riding in Vietnamese traffic, and always wear a proper helmet and carry travel insurance.
Best for: confident, experienced riders looking for an adventure.
5. Overnight cruise from Hanoi
If you would rather the journey be part of the holiday, an all-inclusive cruise rolls transport, accommodation, meals and activities into one package. Prices range widely, from about $89 for a day cruise up to $311 or more for premium overnight trips. You skip the transfers entirely and wake up surrounded by karst scenery.
Best for: travellers who want a seamless, hands-off experience and don't mind paying for it.
Already in Ha Long Bay?
If you are coming from the Ha Long side, the simplest route is the Tuan Chau to Gia Luan ferry, which takes roughly 30 to 50 minutes. It runs only a few times a day, more often in summer than in winter, so check the timetable in advance. From Gia Luan it is about a 45-minute drive across the island to Cat Ba Town.
