How to Get from Hanoi to Cat Ba Island (2026 Guide)

The short answer: a combined bus and ferry ticket is the easiest way to get from Hanoi to Cat Ba Island. It takes about 3 to 3.5 hours door to door, costs roughly $11 to $17, and includes hotel pickup in the Old Quarter so you never have to juggle separate tickets. Below we break down that option and four others, so you can pick what fits your budget and travel style.

Quick answer

The usual way is a tourist shuttle bus plus ferry, around 12.50 to 14 USD one way and three to three and a half hours of travel. Departures from Hanoi run four to five times a day, clustered in the early morning and early afternoon. Take a morning bus so you keep the afternoon on the island.

The route in brief

Cat Ba sits about 130 km from Hanoi by road and another 40 km or so by sea. Almost every option follows the same path: you travel from Hanoi down the Hanoi to Hai Phong expressway, cross the Tan Vu to Lach Huyen bridge toward Got Port, take a short ferry or speedboat over to Cai Vieng on Cat Ba, then drive the final 30 to 40 minutes to Cat Ba Town in the south of the island. The differences come down to comfort, price and how much of it is arranged for you.

One thing to plan around: there is generally no ferry after about 6pm. If your flight lands in the evening, it is usually better to spend the night in Hanoi or Hai Phong and travel the next morning.

1. Bus and ferry combo (the easy default)

This is what most travellers use, and what we book for the majority of our guests. A single ticket covers a comfortable limousine or coach from the Old Quarter, the ferry or speedboat crossing, and the final shuttle into Cat Ba Town. You get picked up at or near your hotel and dropped close to your accommodation on the island.

Standard buses start from around $10.50, while VIP limousine minivans with reclining leather seats, air-con, WiFi and bottled water run about $15 to $17. The whole thing takes roughly 3 to 3.5 hours. It is cheap, scenic and far simpler than most people expect.

Best for: almost everyone. If you want one ticket and zero hassle, this is the one.

2. Private car or taxi

If you are travelling as a family or small group, or you land late and want to go straight from Noi Bai Airport, a private car is the most flexible choice. A driver collects you whenever you want, you can stop for coffee or photos, and cars can drive onto the ferry so you stay in the same vehicle the whole way.

Expect roughly $75 to $145 per car one way depending on vehicle and pickup point, plus a little longer if traffic or the ferry schedule slows you down. Split between four people it is not as expensive as it first looks.

Best for: families, groups, late arrivals, and anyone who values door-to-door comfort.

3. Train and ferry via Hai Phong

For a slower, more local feel, you can take a train from Hanoi to Hai Phong, then continue to a pier and cross to Cat Ba by ferry or speedboat. It usually costs about $10 to $15 and takes around 4 to 5 hours all in. It is not the fastest, but it is cheap and gives you a glimpse of everyday Vietnamese life along the way.

Best for: budget travellers who enjoy the journey as much as the destination.

4. Motorbike

Experienced riders can make the trip by motorbike, taking the bike across on the ferry. It is the most adventurous option and gives you freedom to explore the island once you arrive. Only consider it if you are confident riding in Vietnamese traffic, and always wear a proper helmet and carry travel insurance.

Best for: confident, experienced riders looking for an adventure.

5. Overnight cruise from Hanoi

If you would rather the journey be part of the holiday, an all-inclusive cruise rolls transport, accommodation, meals and activities into one package. Prices range widely, from about $89 for a day cruise up to $311 or more for premium overnight trips. You skip the transfers entirely and wake up surrounded by karst scenery.

Best for: travellers who want a seamless, hands-off experience and don’t mind paying for it.

Already in Ha Long Bay?

If you are coming from the Ha Long side, the simplest route is the Tuan Chau to Gia Luan ferry, which takes roughly 30 to 50 minutes. It runs only a few times a day, more often in summer than in winter, so check the timetable in advance. From Gia Luan it is about a 45-minute drive across the island to Cat Ba Town.

2026 shuttle prices, both tiers

Nearly everyone arrives on a through ticket that bundles the coach leg with the sea crossing. The market has settled into two tiers and the gap between them is about five dollars.

Ticket Typical price What changes
Hanoi to Cat Ba, tourist shuttle 12.50 to 14 USD Standard seats, Old Quarter pickup
Hanoi to Cat Ba, VIP limousine Around 17 USD Reclining seats, wifi, fewer stops
Cat Ba to Hanoi, tourist coach 11.50 to 13 USD Same in reverse
Round trip, tourist 24 to 26 USD Cheaper than two singles
Round trip, VIP limousine Around 32 USD Cheaper than two singles
Shuttle routed via cable car 15 to 19 USD Skips the ferry queue
Noi Bai airport transfer, 4 seat car From around 18 USD Door to door

Book the return at the same time if your dates are fixed. Every operator discounts it, and the late afternoon return seats go first in summer.

Departure windows and the journey, broken down

Operators run four to five departures a day in each direction. From Hanoi they cluster into an early morning group between 06:00 and 08:00, a mid morning service around 10:30, and an early afternoon service between 12:30 and 14:00. Returns from Cat Ba are typically around 09:00, around 12:30, and between 15:30 and 17:00.

The whole trip covers roughly 160 to 170 kilometres. In practice that is about two hours on the expressway out of Hanoi, then a 30 to 40 minute local leg to the pier, then the crossing, then a short run into Cat Ba Town.

Take a morning departure. A 14:00 bus from Hanoi puts you on the island around 17:30, which costs you the swim, the sunset from Cannon Fort and any chance of getting on a boat that day.

The three ways across the water

Crossing Time Notes
Dong Bai to Cai Vieng ferry 30 minutes Every 30 minutes, 05:30 to 18:30. The default
Hydrofoil, same route 20 minutes Around 10 USD per person
Cat Hai to Phu Long cable car 9 minutes 3,955 m over open sea, Guinness record pylons
Tuan Chau to Gia Luan 50 min ferry, 30 min hydrofoil From Ha Long City only, seasonal timetable

One correction worth having. Got Pier and Dinh Vu Pier have both closed. A large number of guides and older blog posts still route travellers through them. Use Dong Bai Ferry Terminal on Cat Hai Island, or the cable car from the same area.

What the day actually looks like

  • Pickup. Most tourist shuttles collect from hotels inside the Hanoi Old Quarter. Outside that zone you are usually asked to walk to a meeting point, so check when you book.
  • The expressway leg. Around two hours, one comfort stop.
  • The transfer at the pier. You change from coach to boat or cable car. Keep your ticket, it covers both legs.
  • The crossing. Twenty to thirty minutes on the water, nine in a cable car cabin.
  • The island leg. A short shuttle into Cat Ba Town, dropping at hotels along the harbour front.

If you are bringing a vehicle, arrive early in summer. The foot passenger queue keeps moving. The vehicle queue does not.

Coming from somewhere other than Hanoi?

Ninh Binh, Ha Long, Sapa and Ha Giang all have their own through tickets to Cat Ba, with different fares, different crossings and different cut-off times. Every route in, with current 2026 prices and timetables, is on one page: Cat Ba Transfers: Every Route In and Out.

Common questions

Three to three and a half hours of actual travel, and four to five hours door to door once you include pickup and the wait at the pier. The route covers roughly 160 to 170 kilometres.

The tourist shuttle plus ferry combination, at around 12.50 to 14 USD one way. Booking a return brings it down further, to roughly 24 to 26 USD for the round trip.

No. Got Pier and Dinh Vu Pier have both closed. The working crossing is Dong Bai Ferry Terminal on Cat Hai Island to Cai Vieng, or the cable car from the same area. Many older guides still get this wrong.

The ferry on a normal day, it is cheaper and runs every 30 minutes. The cable car on a busy summer weekend, when the ferry queue can add an hour or more. The cable car crossing takes nine minutes and the sea views are better.

Yes. Airport transfers by 4 seat car start at around 18 USD per person and run door to door. If you land in the morning you can be swimming the same afternoon.

In June to August, yes, two to three days is sensible and the return legs fill first. From October to April you can usually book the evening before.
