Cat Ba Sunset: Time by Month and Best Viewpoints

Sunset on Cat Ba is as early as 17:10 in winter and as late as 18:37 in July. The best view is from the water, not from land. Here are the times by month and the three places to watch it.

What time is sunset on Cat Ba

The table gives the sunset time in the middle of each month, in Vietnam time (UTC+7). The light is at its best for the 20 minutes or so around it, so be there 30 minutes early. Hills to the west can hide the sun a little before the time shown.

Month Sunset, mid-month
January 17:32
February 17:50
March 18:01
April 18:11
May 18:22
June 18:34
July 18:36
August 18:22
September 17:55
October 17:28
November 17:11
December 17:13

The earliest sunset of the year is around 17:10, in late November. The latest is around 18:37, in early July. The times are calculated for Cat Ba Town and agree with published Hai Phong figures to within two minutes.

Comparing the three spots

Spot How you get there Cost Crowd level Best for
Boat or kayak in Lan Ha Bay Booked tour Cost of the tour Low, spread across the bay The best light on the karsts
Cannon Fort viewpoint Short uphill walk or motorbike from Cat Ba Town Small informal fee, cash Moderate, busier in peak season A wide view of the harbour and town without a boat
Cat Co beach strip Walk from town Free Low to moderate A drink and a view, no logistics

Sunset from the water

The best sunset on Cat Ba is not from land. Watching the light hit the limestone karsts from a boat or kayak in Lan Ha Bay, with the rock turning gold and then pink, is a different thing from watching a horizon. We take it seriously because we build a tour around it.

To be clear about which tour: our day cruises are back at the pier by mid-afternoon. The one that is out on the water at sunset is the Lan Ha Bay Plankton Night Tour. It leaves Cat Ba Town around 16:15, stops for a swim and the sunset, then goes on to night kayaking and the plankton after dark. The timings follow the light, so tell us your date and we will check them against the sunset table above.

The viewpoints worth the walk up

Cannon Fort, an old hilltop fortification above Cat Ba Town, is the easiest proper viewpoint on the island. A short uphill walk or ride gets you a wide view over the town, the harbour and out toward the islands, best in late afternoon light. It is not officially staffed or maintained. You may find a local collecting a small fee at the path. It is informal and can change, so bring small cash and treat any price as negotiable.

Cat Co beach in the evening

If you do not want to leave land, the Cat Co beach strip is an easy place for a drink and the evening light without booking anything. For the three beaches in detail, see the Cat Co beaches guide.

When to go

The dry season, roughly October to April, gives noticeably clearer skies and richer colour over the karsts than the summer months, when haze and afternoon cloud build up. In November the sun sets around 17:10 to 17:55, so you are out of the water and fed before the evening gets late. If a good sunset photo is the point of your trip, build your dates around that window.

A simple sunset evening, planned

Arrive at Cat Co beach in the late afternoon for an early swim while the light is soft. Then head out on the water for the last hour before sunset on a boat or kayak, and come back to town for dinner once it is dark. Fitting the Cannon Fort walk on the same evening as a boat trip is tight, so most people choose one.

Shooting golden hour on the bay

Shoot low on the water if you can, from a kayak or small boat rather than a large deck. It puts you closer to the rock and the light on the water. The good window is short, so have your shot in mind before the sun starts dropping. Put the camera down for some of it.

On a phone, tap to focus on the horizon or the rock face, not the sky, then drag the exposure slider down a little so the sky does not blow out. Turn the flash off. From a moving boat, use burst mode and pick the sharpest frame.

Bringing a drone? Read this first

Vietnam requires a Ministry of Defense permit for any foreign visitor flying a drone, arranged through a local agency and typically taking around a week, with a guarantor requirement. That rules out drone photography for almost anyone on a short holiday. If aerial shots matter, book a boat trip that already includes drone footage from an operator with the right paperwork.

Want the sunset to be part of your plan?

Tell us the evening you are on Cat Ba. We will check the light and the tide for that date and tell you whether to go out on the water or stay on land.

If you only get one shot

If you can only do one, spend it on the water rather than the fort. Land views are good, but Lan Ha Bay looks the way it does in photographs because of the reflection and the way the karsts stack into the distance. You cannot frame that from a hillside.

Common questions

Between about 17:10 in late November and early December and about 18:37 in early July. In mid-October it is about 17:28. Be in place 30 minutes before, because hills to the west can hide the sun a little earlier than the table says.

Cannon Fort for a land view over the town and harbour, but the best sunset is from the water, watching the limestone karsts turn gold and pink from a boat or kayak in Lan Ha Bay.

Yes, if you stay on land. It is an easy walk or ride up, the view is wide, and it is not officially staffed, so expect a small informal fee in cash. If you are also going out on a boat that evening, pick one of the two.

The Cat Co beach strip is an easy spot for a drink and the evening light with no planning.

The dry season, roughly October to April, gives clearer skies and stronger colour than the hazy summer months. Sunset is earliest then, around 17:10 to 17:55 from November to January, so plan your afternoon around it.

The Lan Ha Bay Plankton Night Tour, which has a swim stop and sunset from the water before the night kayaking. Our day cruises are back at the pier by mid-afternoon. Tell us if sunset matters and we will check the light on your date.

Yes. Vietnam requires foreign visitors to get a Ministry of Defense permit through a local agency, which usually takes about a week and requires a Vietnamese guarantor, so flying your own drone on a short trip generally is not practical.
