Summer (June to August): warm, lively, busy
This is peak season. The weather is hot and sunny, ideal for swimming and full days on the boat, and the island has a lively buzz. The trade-offs are bigger crowds, fuller beaches and higher prices, so book tours and rooms a little earlier.
Autumn (September to November): the sweet spot
Crowds thin out and temperatures ease to a comfortable range, often around 15 to 20°C later in the period. It’s excellent for trekking the national park and combining bay trips with land adventures. September and October in particular tend to offer that ideal mix of decent weather and fewer people.
Winter to spring (December to April): mild and dry
Cat Ba’s cooler months feel like a gentle spring, with soft sunshine and little rain. It’s a touch cool for long swims but lovely for hiking, and it’s the best time for rock climbing thanks to the cooler temperatures. March and April warm up nicely and stay relatively quiet.

Typhoon season, plainly
Typhoon risk on this coast peaks in July and August. It does not mean a storm every week, it means that when one arrives the boats stop, the crossings pause and plans move. That is not an operator being difficult, it is the harbour master.
Three practical consequences. Build a flexible half day into any summer trip. Do not schedule your bay day for the last day of your stay, because if it blows out there is nowhere to move it to. And be sceptical of seafood in a storm week, since what is on ice has been there since the boats last went out.
Crowds and prices through the year
Cat Ba has two distinct high seasons that do not overlap. Vietnamese families fill the island from roughly April to October, peaking in June and July around the school holidays, and that is when the beaches and the town are busiest. International travellers arrive more heavily from around December to March, when the weather is cool and dry and the domestic season has ended.
The sweet spot sits between them. Late October and November give you warm water, quiet beaches and shoulder pricing at the same time. Late March and early April do something similar in reverse.
