Cat Ba to Ha Giang: Sleeper Buses, Prices and Timings (2026)
Cat Ba and Ha Giang are 305 km apart and every route between them runs through Hanoi. A through ticket costs $23 to $38 depending on the cabin and the operator, and takes nine and a half to fourteen hours. Here is what each version really involves, and when doing it yourself is cheaper.
The short answer
This is the classic backpacker link: finish the Ha Giang Loop, then come down to the coast for a few days on the water before flying out. It is also the longest single leg most people do in northern Vietnam.
There is no road from Ha Giang to Cat Ba that avoids Hanoi. Everything sold as a direct ticket is a through booking: a sleeper down from the mountains, a changeover in Hanoi, then the standard bus and boat combination out to the island. That is not a problem, it is just worth knowing before you pay extra for the word direct.

The wide spread on the Cat Ba to Ha Giang direction is real. The fast end assumes a clean changeover in Hanoi and no ferry queue. The slow end is what happens when the schedule is built around arriving in Ha Giang at a time that suits the loop tour operators rather than you.
The version most people actually do
If you are coming off the Ha Giang Loop, your tour almost certainly ends back in Ha Giang city in the late afternoon, and the default onward move is the night bus to Hanoi. That bus gets in somewhere between 03:00 and 05:00, which sounds grim and mostly is, but it lines up neatly with the first Cat Ba departures at 06:00 and 07:30.
Done that way the whole thing costs about $23 to $28 and you arrive on Cat Ba before lunch, having lost one night of sleep instead of one day of holiday. The catch is that the connection is yours to manage. If the night bus runs late you are buying a new ticket, and nobody is holding a seat for you.
The through ticket removes that risk and costs a few dollars more. Which one is right depends on how much a missed morning is worth to you.
Coming the other way
Cat Ba to Ha Giang is the harder direction to time, because Ha Giang Loop tours almost all start in the morning. An afternoon departure from Cat Ba puts you in Ha Giang overnight or very early, which is exactly what you want if your loop starts the next day, and exactly what you do not want if you were hoping to sleep first.
If your loop starts on a fixed date, work backwards from it and give yourself one buffer night in Ha Giang. Rooms there are cheap and the alternative is arriving at 04:00 on the day your motorbike is booked.
What to expect on board
- Cabin sleepers have a proper flat berth, a curtain, air conditioning with a personal vent, a seatbelt and a USB socket
- Water and wet wipes are usually included, food is not
- Shoes come off and go in a bag at the door, which is normal and not negotiable
- Luggage goes in the hold, so keep your passport, phone and money on you
- Toilet stops are every two to three hours at highway services
Book the lower berth if you have the choice. The upper berths are warmer, the ladder is awkward with a big bag, and on the mountain sections above Tuyen Quang you feel the corners considerably more up there.
