Cat Ba to Sapa: Sleeper Buses, Prices and How Long It Really Takes (2026)
Cat Ba to Sapa costs $35 to $40 one way and takes nine to eleven hours. Almost every ticket sold as direct is really a connection through Hanoi, which is fine, but it changes which departure you should book. Two of the six daily runs put you in Sapa at half past three in the morning.
The short answer
This is the longest of the common Cat Ba transfers, roughly 400 km with a sea crossing at one end and a mountain road at the other. Operators sell it as one ticket: hotel pickup in Cat Ba Town, a bus or limousine to the mainland and on to Hanoi, then a VIP cabin sleeper up to Sapa, with a drop-off at your Sapa hotel.
A small number of companies run a genuine no change service on a royal cabin sleeper. It costs a little more and mostly runs overnight. Everything else changes vehicle in Hanoi, usually at an office rather than a bus station, with somebody waiting for you.

The half past three problem
The 15:30 and 16:00 departures from Cat Ba arrive in Sapa at around 03:30. That is not a typo and it is not an overnight sleeper you wake up from at a civilised hour. You are put out on a cold street in a mountain town at 3am, and unless you have paid for the previous night as well, no hotel will let you into a room.
If you are taking one of those two runs, book your Sapa hotel from the night before and message them that you are arriving in the early morning. It costs one extra night and it is the difference between a bad memory and a fine one. Otherwise take the 06:00 or 09:00 and arrive in daylight.
Going the other way the timing is much kinder. The 23:00 out of Sapa is a proper night bus: you get on, you sleep, you are on Cat Ba by late morning with the whole day ahead of you. If your schedule allows only one overnight leg, make it this one.
What the ticket includes
- Pickup at your hotel in Cat Ba Town, or at the pickup point on Dien Bien Phu street in Sapa
- The road legs on both sides, and the tolls
- The sea crossing, ferry or speedboat depending on the operator and the hour
- A berth on the sleeper, not just a reclining seat, on the overnight legs
- Drop-off at your hotel at the far end
Water and wifi are usually thrown in. Meals are not, and the stops are at highway restaurants where the food is unremarkable and the prices are tourist prices. Bring something.
Direct or connection?
The honest answer is that the connection is fine. The changeover in Hanoi is handled, somebody is holding a sign, and the total time is much the same. What you get for the extra few dollars on a direct royal cabin service is not speed, it is not having to wake up, gather your bag and get onto a different vehicle in the middle of the journey.
If you sleep badly on buses, pay for the direct cabin. If you sleep like a stone, save the money.
Should you break the trip in Hanoi instead?
Plenty of people do, and there is a case for it. Cat Ba to Hanoi is three to three and a half hours for around $13, and Hanoi to Sapa is a well served route with a dozen operators. Splitting it means a night in Hanoi, a shower, and a shorter day on each side.
It costs a little more once you add the room, and it burns a day. If you are on a two week trip that day matters. If you are on a month, take the night in Hanoi and arrive in Sapa able to walk.
