Seasonal guide
Cat Ba in Winter
Winter, roughly November to March, is the island’s quiet season and a quietly brilliant time to come. Fewer crowds, cooler air for trekking, softer prices, and a moody, beautiful bay that most day-trippers skip.
What the weather is like
Expect cool, sometimes misty days rather than tropical heat. Mornings on the water can be brisk, so bring a layer and a light waterproof. It is comfortable hiking weather, which is exactly why the trekking is at its best.
What to do in winter
This is prime time for jungle trekking in Cat Ba National Park, kayaking the calm lagoons of Lan Ha Bay, exploring caves, and climbing on milder days. Without the summer crowds, the trails and the bay feel like they are yours.
Why it suits backpackers
Quiet season means better value and a more authentic island, run by the locals who actually live here year round. You get real attention, flexible plans, and none of the peak-season rush.
What to pack
Layers, a light rain jacket, trainers or trekking shoes with grip, swimwear for the braver, and a dry bag for the kayak.
