Cat Ba to Ninh Binh: Buses, Prices and Real Schedules (2026)
There is a direct bus between Cat Ba and Ninh Binh. It costs $11 to $16 one way, takes four to five hours, and the ferry crossing is already inside the ticket. You do not need to route back through Hanoi, and you do not need to buy three separate tickets to make it work.
The short answer
Ninh Binh and Cat Ba sit about 160 km apart, and almost everyone doing the northern Vietnam loop links them directly. Several operators run a bus, ferry, bus package once or twice a day in each direction. You are collected at your hotel in Tam Coc, Trang An or Ninh Binh city, driven to the mainland ferry port, and dropped in Cat Ba Town. One ticket, one price, nobody to argue with halfway.
The alternative, going back through Hanoi and out again, costs roughly the same but adds two to three hours and a change of bus station. There is very little reason to do it unless you actually want a night in Hanoi.

These are the operators’ published one-way fares, checked in September 2026. Expect them to move a little with the season, and expect a surcharge over Tet and national holidays (Cat Ba Express publishes 20% for those dates).

These are the times operators publish for 2026. Treat the arrival column as a good day rather than a promise. The road part is predictable, the ferry queue is not, and in July and August it can add an hour.

What the ticket actually includes
- Pickup at your hotel in Ninh Binh city, Tam Coc or Trang An (the last two normally need two passengers, otherwise you meet the bus in town)
- The road leg on both sides, and the tolls
- The ferry or speedboat crossing, already paid for
- Drop-off at your hotel in central Cat Ba Town, or at a pier if you ask in advance
What is not included: food, and any hotel outside the central strip of Cat Ba Town. If you are staying in Xuan Dam, out on the coast road, or anywhere with the word bungalow in the name, say so when you book rather than when the driver is already on the island.
The detail that makes this route easier than the Hanoi one
On the Ninh Binh run the bus itself drives onto the ferry. You stay in your seat, or stand on the deck if you want the view, and your bag stays in the hold the whole way across.
The Hanoi route often uses a speedboat instead, which is faster but means unloading everything, walking it down the pontoon and loading it again on the other side. If you are travelling with a big bag, a child, or anything you would rather not carry twice, the Ninh Binh style crossing is the more comfortable one.
Which one to book
If your date is fixed and you want the widest choice of departure times, take the $13 tourist bus. If you are keeping the trip cheap, the $11 seat is the same road on a similar vehicle and the saving is real, it just runs three times a day rather than five. The $16 limousine earns its money if you are tall, if you get travel sick at the back of a 45 seater, or if you simply want fewer stops.
Take a morning departure where you can. A 07:00 or 09:00 start puts you on Cat Ba with the afternoon still usable, which is the difference between arriving in time for a swim at Cat Co and arriving in the dark.
When this route goes wrong
Three things catch people out. The last afternoon departure has less margin than it looks, so a slow ferry can put you into Cat Ba after dark. Between September and April the crossings thin out, and a cancelled sailing has fewer backups behind it. And over Tet and national holidays fares rise by around 20% while seats sell out days ahead.
None of that is a reason to avoid the route. It is a reason to book a morning seat, and to book it before the day you travel rather than on it.
