Viet Hai sits inside Cat Ba National Park, ringed by limestone on three sides and the sea on the fourth. For most of its history the only ways in were a mountain trail or a boat. That isolation is the whole point of going, and it is also the thing that is now changing fastest.

What Viet Hai actually is

A small farming and fishing commune inside the national park boundary, a handful of kilometres inland from its own pier on Lan Ha Bay. There is no through road to the rest of the island. The valley floor is flat and green, buffalo still work some of the fields, and a few of the old mud and thatch houses have been kept standing as a record of what the whole village looked like a generation ago.

It is not a museum village and it is not staged. People live and farm here. It is also, realistically, a village that now earns a meaningful share of its income from visitors, which is why the way you behave there matters more than in a town.

Three ways in

1. Boat and bicycle, the standard route

A boat from Ben Beo pier across Lan Ha Bay to Viet Hai pier, then a flat, quiet cycle inland to the village through the karst gap. This is the version most day trips use, it takes a morning, and the cycling section is genuinely easy, no hills of consequence. Boat trips that include the village typically run 300,000 to 500,000 VND per person, roughly 12 to 20 USD.

2. Trek in, boat out

The 14 kilometre trail from Cat Ba National Park headquarters past Frog Lake and down into the valley. Five to six hours, graded challenging, and the best day on the island for anyone who actually likes walking. Lunch in the village, then cycle to the pier and take a boat back across the bay. Take a guide, the middle section is poorly marked and has no phone signal.

3. Stay the night

Homestays in the village run about 200,000 to 400,000 VND a night, roughly 8 to 16 USD. This is the option almost nobody takes and the one that changes the trip. The day boats leave around four in the afternoon and the valley goes completely quiet. No traffic, no karaoke, no light pollution worth speaking of.

What there is to do, which is not much, deliberately

• Cycle the valley loop. Flat, shaded in parts, past rice fields and fruit gardens with limestone walls on every side.
• See the preserved mud houses. Low thatch and packed earth, the standard build here before concrete arrived.
• Eat lunch in the village. Usually chicken raised locally, garden vegetables, and whatever came out of the bay that morning.
• Swim off the pier side. Quiet water, no boat traffic outside arrival and departure windows.
• Sit still. This sounds like filler. It is not. The valley is one of the few places in the archipelago where you hear nothing mechanical for an hour at a time.

Viet Hai rewards people who arrive without a checklist. If you need something scheduled every ninety minutes, do the bay cruise instead and enjoy it more.

Going respectfully

The village is inside a national park and inside a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. A few things follow from that.

• Ask before photographing people or their homes. A gesture at the camera and a nod is enough, and it is almost always given.
• Buy locally in the village itself, not from the boat operator, if you want the money to land here.
• Carry your rubbish back out. Waste collection inside the park is limited and what gets left behind stays.
• Do not feed or chase the buffalo. They are working animals, not scenery.
• Keep noise down after dark if you stay. The village starts early.

When to go

October to April, for the same reasons the rest of the island is best then: less rain, lower humidity, clearer air over the bay for the boat leg. June to August the valley holds heat, and August alone averages around 280 mm of rain across 17 wet days, which turns the trek in from a hard walk into an unpleasant one. What a trip to Viet Hai costs, line by line

Almost nobody publishes this, so here it is. The boat leg carries a compulsory bay sightseeing fee on top of whatever you pay for the boat itself, and that catches people out when a quoted tour price turns out not to include it.

Children under six enter the bay free, as do visitors with severe disabilities. Seniors, students and people from recognised ethnic minority groups pay half with documentation.

Chartering your own boat

If there are six or more of you, chartering beats buying seats. Boats out of Ben Beo are priced per vessel, not per head.

Four numbered sightseeing routes operate out of Ben Beo. Route one is the short loop past the floating village. Route two is the six hour circuit that takes in Cai Beo, the outer islands and the caves, and it is the one that reaches the Viet Hai landing comfortably. Ask which route your operator has booked, not just how long the boat is out.

Trekking in: the honest timing

The park trail from Trung Trang past Ao Ech, or Frog Lake, into the valley is 14 kilometres and takes four to six hours depending on your pace and the state of the ground. Six is realistic in the wet months, four is achievable in November or December when the limestone is dry.
